Hotel Heritage

Introduction

HOTEL HERITAGE is the first deluxe hotel built in Bhaktapur, a UNESCO world heritage site. It is a boutique hotel which successfully blends traditional Nepali look and feel with modern amenities. The hotel is located a short 7-minute walk from Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

History comes alive in this establishment where Malla, Rana, Newari and Mithila influences, as well as Hindu and Buddhist traditions all blend effortlessly to create a tasteful, cozy and unique hideaway. Every part of the hotel has an intriguing story to tell.

With an aim to preserve ancient architecture and traditions, we have collected construction waste from the demolition of old structures, and refashioned them into various uses at the hotel. The beautiful windows on the front elevation, and some of the antique marble and stone floors in the entrance come from the rubble of a royal palace, and are over 400 years old. Handmade clay bricks with Newari script dot the hotel's interior, and were also salvaged from a royal residence.

Every piece at the hotel has a story, a history, the handiwork of Nepali artisans, and a flavor of the local community. Almost all of the furniture in the hotel is either antique, or built from repurposed wood at least 200 years old. One of the antique window frames inside the hotel was pulled out from a bonfire at Shivaratri by the discerning Mr. Dhaubadel.

While the hotel is a deep bow to Nepali tradition and culture, you will also be properly pampered with all modern amenities including luxurious large rooms, modern bathrooms, as well as 24-hour electricity, hot water and free wi-fi.

The Kutumba Restaurant serves delicious Nepali as well as continental food, and homemade rakshi. The trained staff will welcome you warmly, Nepali style and will make sure your stay here is perfect.
Close proximity to the Kathmandu international airport makes it very accessible for international travelers. Nagarkot, Suryabinayak, Sankhu, Panauti, Namobuddha are all a short drive away. Guided hikes and bicycle hires are also available.

Story

Hotel Heritage started as a dream that Mr. Prakash Dhaubadel had, to preserve the rich traditions and heritage of Bhaktapur, and honor the memory of his father Mr. Akhanda Prasad Dhaubadel, and his ancestors who have lived here since the 12th century.
Mr. Dhaubadel grew up in Bhaktapur and is intimately familiar with the history, traditions, and hidden treasures of the area, and enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge, and helping you build an exclusive itinerary.

Mr. Dhaubadel is also a karate expert with over 37 years of training, and an active member of his community. His discipline, attention to detail, and deep sense of social responsibility is visible in every part of the hotel. He has commissioned local artists and artisans for the interior, and the products used in the hotel.
Clay tiles used for the floors are produced by the renowned potters of Bhaktapur, The banana carpets on the floor are sourced locally, and the Mithila artwork in the hotel is painted by 6 artists from Janakpur, on-location.

Handmade lokta paper is used throughout the hotel. The curtains have been specially produced by a small weaving workshop nearby, and the rugs are made by hand by Gurung people living in the hills.
The artisans are now flooded with new business after their products were places at the hotel. Some of these items are also available for sale in THE KUBERA GIFT SHOP, located on the ground floor of the hotel. The shop also sells a wealth of Nepali items including pashminas, bronze and copper statues, and handcarved silver jewellery.
The hotel is also helping the community by giving more jobs to single mothers, and working on cleaning up the nearby Mangal Tirtha river.
